Bowen works on your fascia, the soft connective tissue including muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves, that holds and binds your body together, and scientists and researchers are acknowledging the major role it plays in allowing your body to function properly.
Multi-layered and connecting all parts of the body, fascia is like a laden tablecloth – tug one corner and the position of everything on the table changes, just as one dysfunctional area of fascia in your body can change the position of everything else. Bowen focusses on finding and targeting that dysfunction, allowing your body to put everything back into place.
My aim is simple – identify and target the root cause of dysfunction and get you back into symmetry and balance, quickly.
One of the most effective and powerful therapies I practice, I find most people only need 3-4 treatments before experiencing a positive long-term improvement to their health and wellbeing.
Bowen can also be carried out through light clothing so there’s no need to undress.
After an initial consultation, I'll get you on the treatment couch to carry out assessments and observations that will allow me to pinpoint where I need to work, where the dysfunction is coming from. I'll then make key moves over specific points on your body, assessing the impact of each as I go.
During the treatment there will be short pauses where I’ll leave you to rest for between 1-3 minutes if I can see a change is taking place. These short pauses allow you and your body to process and respond to the work I've done before I move on. Ultimately I'm looking to get your body back into symmetry, back into balance.
At the end of each session, we’ll discuss any additional support you might require, including after care guidance to help you make the most of your treatment.
Traditionally Bowen isn't mixed with other therapies during a session, but experience and additional training with Bowen pioneers has taught me that tools and techniques from Thai Stretch massage and lymphatic bodywork can really help to support and benefit this work. If I think this applies to you we'll discuss it during your consultation before proceeding with the treatment, and of course please contact me if you'd like to discuss it prior to booking.
This will depend largely upon:
As a starting point I generally suggest 3 treatments, each a week to 2 weeks apart over a 3-4 week period. For most of my clients 3-4 treatments is enough and then they'll either opt for some regular maintenance treatments or see me as and when they need to.
Wear something comfortable! There's no need to remove your clothes, but I would ask you avoid wearing jeans or any heavy / thick fabrics if at all possible. There are changing facilities so please feel free to bring something to change into if this is easier.
There's no cracking or twisting in a Bowen treatment, and on the whole the moves are gentle. However, we may discover a particular sore or tender area during the treatment, and so how we work this is totally up to you. There's a fine line between 'you've hit the spot' and 'I did not like that' and I don't want to cross that line so we work together on more tender areas - because if you feel safe and comfortable, the work I do is going to be more effective.
What happens as a result of your treatment very much varies from person to person - and on the reason you came! We can discuss all this at your treatment, or I'm happy to have a chat to you beforehand if you'd prefer. Just drop me a line at sarah@sarahwoodhousetherapy.co.uk or call / text me on 07715213392. Yes. The additional time in your first appointment is so I can take a full health and wellbeing history and provide you with the treatment you need.
